Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are complex mental illnesses, they are not a choice or a phase. When left untreated, they can lead to sever dysfunction.  Due to their complicated nature, eating disorders are very difficult to understand and therefore can be profoundly isolating and scary for the individual experiencing them. This is why it requires immense courage to reach out for help. There are various types of eating disorders, each persons experience will be different as it will be shaped by their personal history and circumstances.

Some common factors in eating disorders

Body Image

Body image can be described as how we see ourselves when we look in the mirror or when we visualise ourself mentally. This also encompasses: the experience of how you feel inside your body, what you think about your body size and appearance, and what you believe about your body (the meaning of being in your body such as internalised assumptions or generalisations.)

Food obsession

A common factor in eating disorders is having rigid rules around food. This kind of physical and mental restriction can lead to mindset of deprivation contributing to loss of control around food and an obsession regarding what should/shouldn't be eaten. Extreme guilt and shame are common experiences around food.

Self-esteem

Self-esteem refers to an individual's overall subjective sense of their own worth, value, or confidence. Self-esteem is shaped by various factors, including experiences, achievements, relationships, and societal influences. It plays a significant role in mental and emotional well-being. İndividuals with eating disorders have the tendency to overemphasize the importance of their physical appearance when thinking of their own value which can lead to low self-esteem.

Perfectionism

Perfectionism is a personality trait characterized by a relentless pursuit of flawlessness and setting extremely high standards for oneself. Individuals with perfectionistic tendencies often strive for impeccability in their work, appearance, or achievements. When reflected onto our body, this pursuit of perfectionism can lead to extreme discontent with ones body and the rigidness around eating that is characteristic of eating disorders.
